Hansen Bros. Enterprises

The History of Hansen Bros. Enterprises

1953
Hansen Bros. Enterprises was established. Originally there were three Hansen brothers, Arlie, Iver Jr. and Karsten. At the time, Arlie worked in the construction industry, Iver was employed as an engineer with the County of Solano and Karsten was employed by the State of California as a painter. The three brothers pooled their resources and purchased a loader, dump truck and trailer. Soon after, they purchased a small bulldozer and a pickup. Arlie worked full time with Hansen Bros. while Iver and Karsten continued with their jobs, spending weekends, holidays and vacations working for Hansen Bros.
1954
In February of 1954 a tragic job site accident took the life of Iver. After the accident, Karsten quit his job with the State and moved to Grass Valley, devoting all of his efforts to the new business. In July of 1954 Hansen Bros. purchased the Bear River Gravel Plant from Gus Vollmer. The original purchase consisted of gravel screening plant, four trucks the mining claim and land. Since that time additional acreage has been purchased and the plant has evolved from processing river rock to an open rock quarry producing, crushed rock, building stone and assorted landscape materials.
1957
Hansen Bros. purchased a rock crushing operation located at the Allison Ranch Mine site and several pieces of construction equipment from Floyd and Ida Bastian. Today you can still see some of this antique equipment on display in front of our office on La Barr Meadows Rd.
1958
Hamilton's Ready Mix was purchased. This business consisted of two ready mix trucks and a batch plant located on North Auburn Street in Grass Valley.
1960
A rock crushing and gold recovery plant located at the site of the Empire Mine was purchased. This plant was part of a project to clean up old mine rock (tailings) and to recover any gold that remained after the mine closed. Hansen Bros. processed rock at this site for approximately ten years before the project was completed. The Empire Mine is now part the California Department of Parks and Recreation and is designated as a State Historic Park in the Sierra Gold Sector and is an important segment of the mining history of California.
1961
After a fire burned the original shop building located at the residence of Arlie and Sibley Hansen, equipment & truck maintenance operations were moved to property on La Barr Meadows Road that had been purchased from Bob Winkle along with various pieces of construction equipment. Additional property on La Barr Meadows Road was purchased from a small lumber mill company. (Currently, our construction offices and equipment rental shop are located the original building used by the mill.) This was the same year the final action was taken to incorporate the holdings of Hansen Bros. Enterprises.
1963
The Ready Mix batch plant was moved from North Auburn Street to La Barr Meadows Road where it remains today.
1972
The business office was moved from the residence of Arlie and Sibley Hansen to its current location on La Barr Meadow Rd.
1973
The Greenhorn Gravel plant and property were purchased from Terex. This plant produces a wide variety of washed, crushed and screened products obtained from the sand and gravel beds of the Greenhorn Creek. The gravel extraction at this location plays an important role for the Nevada Irrigation District (NID) by preventing abundance gravel from washing down stream into the Rollins Lake Reservoir.
1994
Hansen Bros. Enterprises established its newest division with the addition of HBE Rentals. At the time, growth in the construction industry was strong and the need for dependable equipment was on the rise. HBE Rentals was established to meet these demands by offering a wide selection of professional grade equipment supported by a knowledgeable staff. In its early years, HBE Rentals predominantly carried equipment for the construction industry. Over the years HBE's rental inventory has been diversified. Today HBE Rentals carries a wide selection of tools, equipment and supplies to meet the needs of contractors, home owners and various other industries.
1997
The North Star Rock Products was purchased from the Abbott family. Hansen Bros. operated this facility through 2000 when the resources were depleted. After closing the doors to the quarry operation the site was graded and prepared for future commercial use.
2006
Hansen Bros. purchased the assets of MBI Ready-Mix.  This purchase included a concrete batch plant & trucks, U-Cart mini concrete batch plant, landscape supply yard and eight acres of land located in the heart of Colfax, California.  With this expansion Hansen Bros. is better equipped to meet the demands of the growing population in the Gold Country.
